Autumn is the best season in Edinburgh. Don’t believe us? Lets try and convince you…

It’s All So Quiet

Not completely silent, the city is still buzzing BUT the madness of Festivals in August is over for another year! Now we aren’t exactly celebrating that as we do love the Fringe, but it’s nice to have our commute times back to normal and be able to enjoy the beauty of the Royal Mile, without sharing with 75% of the worlds population. Also the Autumn weather makes it all foggy and romantic, if you ignore the frequent rain showers and chilly winds.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Winter

Normally Autumn for us means Scottish rugby Autumn Tests, but with the World Cup taking place in Japan, we have to make do with supporting the team through the TV. However, it does mean more time to get excited for the annual Samhuinn Fire Festival! The festival marks the transition from Summer to Winter and takes place on top of Calton Hill on Halloween night. The festival tells the story of Summer by Winter, shown by a standoff between the Summer and Winter kings. The Cailleach, a Celtic goddess, oversees the battle and decides the fate of each king, before ushering in the colder months. It’s an incredibly immersive experience, you can find out more details on the Beltane Fire Festival website.

Theatre Time

Hide away from the (sometimes) winter-like weather in the warmth of one of Edinburgh’s cosy theaters. From Tony-award winners and classic plays, to top-class stand-up acts and musicals, the Playhouse, Traverse and King’s Theatres have got you covered. Check out The List or What’s On Edinburgh to find out what’s coming up this season. Highlights for 2019 include We Will Rock You, Mamma Mia, The Rocky Horror Show and so many incredible Ballet performances.

An Excuse to Shop

Colder weather means more layers. An excuse to hit the shops and buy a few cosy jumpers. From vintage stores to high end fashion, high street brands to independent boutiques, there is something for every fashion sense and age to be found in Edinburgh. Try Princes Street, George Street or pop into Harvey Nichols and detour to the Fourth Floor and its Chocolate Lounge.

Do It The Dunstane Way

Christmas is coming, so take the time to treat yourself before you start the festive shopping! The newly refurbished rooms spread across Dunstane House and Hampton House, are the ideal place to hideout from the changeable Autumn weather. People say you can experience all four seasons in one day in Scotland, and Autumn is definitely the best time to experience this ‘phenomenon’. So if you’d rather not take the chance, cosy up in your luxurious bed or sit by the fire in the Ba’ Bar and experience Chef Anthony’s unique take on our Orkney produce. We have some great offers on accommodation throughout the year, so keep an eye on out offers page to grab an Autumn deal. Book online or get in touch direct to choose the best bedroom!
