It’s not long to go until one of the best weekends in the Scottish social calendar – the Royal Highland Show. The weather is always unpredictable at this event, some years you’re soaking up the sunshine and others, well, you’re just soaking! Whether you’re a countryside lover or more at home in the city, it’s the perfect day out for you.
The Highland Show is the day you discover an interest in something you never thought you would enjoy! The showing programme is packed with Equestrian events and Show Jumping – some of the big stars of the show jumping world have been spotted here! There are also the showing competitions for cattle and sheep as well. Farriery contests, sheep shearing competitions and the heavy horse turnouts are worth a watch. You can get up close to see all of the animals as you wander around the show, stand next to huge Shire horses or watch the skills of the dogs and handlers from Sealpin Gundogs. It’s an incredible sight!
If food is more your thing, then the “food tent” is for you. Scotland’s Larder is on display, with everything from Orkney cheeses and oatcakes, to olive oils, fudge, chocolate, bread, sausages…the list is endless! Don’t be afraid to ask for tasters. There are also live demonstrations, and plenty of drinks to try as well. Many of our own suppliers will be there, so take a break in the Gin garden, or just resign yourself to spending the afternoon there…
Plenty of educational areas too, for both adults and children, about the importance of the farming industry, sustainable practices, bees and almost anything you can think of related to the incredible countryside here in Scotland. Still not enough for you? There are tractor displays, you can buy hot tubs (yes, really!) and so many amazing sculptures and features for your home and garden. There are craft tents, with everything from home accessories to jewellery and incredible art by artists such as Tamsin Thomson and Tori Ratcliffe Art.
The Highland Show have many years of experience in getting people to and from the showground. That’s not to say it’ll be fast though! The popularity of the show means you can’t escape the inevitable traffic jams, but they do move faster than other shows we have been to.
GREAT NEWS! There is a dedicated Lothian Bus (number 98) that runs from George Street all the way to the show gates. We’ll let you guess where the bus also stops…right outside our front door! Yep, getting to the Highland Show couldn’t be easier for Dunstane Houses guests. The bus runs frequently throughout the day. You can drive and details can be found on the Royal Highland Show website.
Seeing as the bus will pick you up from our doorstep, it would seem silly to stay anywhere else. Take a look at the latest special offers at The Dunstane Houses and book your room now – booking direct guarantees you the best rates!
